Question: I want to lose weight and get healthy. I want to start walking. How many steps should I do each day? I can’t do 10,000 steps a day. ![]()
Answer:
It’s safe for most people to walk one mile a day for a week then add a half a mile or more per day each week and you don’t have to be walking at an uncomfortable pace, meaning walk brisk but not fast and slow down your pace if that’s too much. It’s fine to increase and decrease your pace back and forth, just move! Within a few weeks you may find yourself easily walking for longer periods of time. Don’t obsess about it. The goal is to make healthy living a lifestyle. Health is emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual so to achieve that you start by changing your mindset and the rest will follow. When we hit a wall, so to speak, it’s what we think that gets us there. Just remember that small consistent steps create a path to sustainable success because you learn along the way. The all or nothing mentality will take you out every time because it’s overwhelming and unsustainable. Growth is a process not an event. You’re on the right track my friend. Be gentle with yourself, realistic, and steady. You’ll get there. ![]()
